Master Planning: The Role It Plays In Community Fire Prevention
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. There was a time when small rural communities dominated the landscape, with individual houses dotted all throughout the inside and outskirts of town. Because each dwelling was significantly distanced from all others, it was a somewhat difficult chore to attend to issues of fire, particularly in relation to water supply, water pressure, fire hydrants and emergency equipment accessibility. As master planned communities came into existence, the notion of fire prevention quickly took a turn for the better, inasmuch as these housing developments provided a means by which such issues could be adequately addressed. The writer discusses how master planned communities help in fire prevention. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Environmental Law And Theories Of State
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Environmentalists believe that while federal environmental laws are essential, there are still other ways to accomplish the many goals that still have to be attained by means of state and local laws. It is true that there has been a great amount achieved in the nearly thirty years since the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) was implemented; indeed, most environmental rules have proven themselves to be cost-effective and good for the economy. But some critics contend that not enough local attention has been given as a means by which to offset the complacency that exists today. Coal Mining Destruction
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing surface mining. Surface mining used to be more commonly known as strip mining, and the first law requiring environmental restoration of the land after the completion of a strip mining operation was passed 20 years ago. Though the law was amended in 1997 to be far more stringent in its environmental requirements, it is far too easy to be granted variance on the environmental standards. Drastic surface mining has become commonplace in south central West Virginia, where the surface frequently is the current level of mountain exposed through mountaintop removal. The method is just what its name implies—coal that used to be mined underground is now simply collected from the surface, but only after much of the mountain has been removed and dumped into a valley below the mine. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Environmental Law
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. The environment has been in trouble for a long time. With the support of environmental law, significant trends have been established to rectify damage already done and prevent any further from occurring. The writer discusses environmental law as it relates to the Clean Air Act of 1963 and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Industrial Progress: Wonderland or Wasteland?
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Reviews two articles by Thomas Berry and Arne Naess that show that some people will argue that industrial growth can be accomplished without damaging world ecosystems. New England Fisheries
[ send me this paper ]
The people of New England take their fishing very seriously. They have to - for generations it has been their livelihood, their sport and their hobby. Fishing off the shores of New England began in 1497, with the voyage of John Cabot. The first piece of technology to make an impact on the fish population off of New England was the steamer engine. In 1914, the U.S. Commissioner of Fisheries appointed a committee to investigate what damage the otter trawl might do to fish stocks. The committee reported that the new technology was already causing a decline of fish in the North Sea. This 5 page paper asserts that there is still time to halt the destruction of the ecosystem that has defined the New England coast for as long as people have been there to notice. There is time to stop the decimation of the fish population by instigating measures that will reduce the fishing Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Proposal to Clean Up Connecticut's "Filty Five"
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page paper presenting a proposal and rationale for requiring that Connecticut's oldest operating power plants no longer be exempt from any current standards. Technology exists now that was only dreamed of in the 1970s; the business of pollution abatement is old enough that it is no longer a high-dollar item relative to the benefits it provides. Newer power plants are far more efficient than are older ones, both in their use of power-generating fuel and byproduct emissions. Industry has come to the place that power plant emissions are far less of an issue now than in the past, but there are older installations that were exempt from original standard-setting and have managed to remain so over the decades.
