Water
Pollution And Paper Manufacturing
[ send
me this paper ]
8 pages in length. The pulp and paper industry produces a
significant amount of chemical waste by way of its
manufacturing processes. These toxic substances, which
include inorganics for pulping and bleaching to slimicides
and polymers for retention and wet and dry strength, have
caused a great deal of water pollution having been allowed
to freely run into potable supplies. This runoff effect has
caused growing concerns with regard to the overall negative
impact pulp and paper mills have upon the environment. As a
means by which to address these concerns, countries
worldwide have begun to focus upon the implementation of
regulatory and monitoring programs, with recycling
representing just one element. Still, there exist water
pollutants from recycling methods, however, government
regulations are expected to address these issues by
mandating the use of special chemicals made to control and
remove the contaminants. The writer discusses water
pollution as it relates to the paper manufacturing industry.

Apalachicola
Bay / The Threat Of Pollution From Inadequate Sewage
Treatment
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Florida's Apalachicola Bay is in grave
danger. The fact that raw sewage and toxic chemicals are
floating around in its waters, contaminating the ecosystem
that depends upon its flow for life-giving components, has
played a significant role in rendering the bay a health
hazard. The reason for this perpetual contamination is that
the existing sewage treatment program is woefully
inadequate, having little effect on the massive amounts of
contaminants present within the water. In economic terms,
such contamination means a considerable threat to the
various seafood products acquired from the bay, including
its well-known oysters, fish, shrimp and crab supply. The
waters that flow in the Apalachicola Bay are essential for
sustaining these entities, as well as providing nourishment
to the valuable seal life that represents the area's
biodiversity. The writer discusses how inadequate sewage
treatment is threatening the Apalachicola Bay. Bibliography
lists 4 sources.

Nonpoint
Pollution: Acid Rain and the Role of Vegetation and Sediment
[ send
me this paper ]
A 10 page overview of the factors which contributes to
nonpoint pollution. Emphasizes the impact of nonpoint
pollution to acid rain and in turn to water pollution.
Discusses the impact of nonpoint pollution to vegetation
and, in turn, the role of vegetation in buffering the
effects of acid rain. Devises a simple study designed to
access the degree of this phenomena using data which has
already been collected by state and federal agencies and
correlating this data to vegetative types identified using
aerial photographs. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Water
Pollution and Acid Rain Deposition in Victoria, British
Columbia
[ send
me this paper ]
This 18 page paper provides an introduction to the issue of
water pollution and water quality in Victoria, British
Columbia, and determines the nature of the issue and
possible ways of addressing the problem. This paper takes an
active or process oriented view of the problem, and defines
the importance of the issue in the future. Bibliography
lists 10 sources.

Environmental
Problems In The Chesapeke Bay Area
[ send
me this paper ]
Population growth and water pollution is studied and causes
for the resulting problems are sought. Several environmental
theories are explored regarding population in this 7 page
analysis. Maryland population statistics are used and
demographics are considered in comparison with national
data. Current trends are noted. Bibliography lists 11
sources.

Fresh
Water – A Precious and Fading Natural Resource in Austin,
Texas
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The population growth in Austin Texas is
causing the pollution and loss of water in the area.
Describes the situation and the steps the city is taking to
deal with it. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Los
Angeles and Owens Valley: Over 80 Years of Water Conflict
[ send
me this paper ]
This 10 page paper relates the story of the conflicts
between Los Angeles and Owens Valley over water rights and
access to water through the Owens Valley Aqueduct, which was
built to provide access to water for the city of Los
Angeles. This paper provides both sides of this issue,
including the charge by farmers in Owens Valley that the
water distribution has depleted the valley of a necessary
resource for agriculture and the argument that Los Angeles
needed the water resources and built the aqueduct for that
purpose. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Marine
Pollution
[ send
me this paper ]
A 3 page paper discussing the ocean’s reaction to
polluting influences. Unless shocked beyond recovery, any
body of water has the power to at partially clean itself,
given enough time and enough physical space. The great
witness to that ability is that we have not been able to
“kill” any vast areas, in spite of apparent attempts to
do so. The paper describes how inland farming pollution
adversely affected the southern North Carolina coast
following Hurricane Fran in 1996. Shellfish populations and
commercial fishing had nearly recovered by the time
Hurricane Floyd caused extensive inland flooding in 1999.
The effects on the ocean have already been seen as
floodwaters have moved through rivers into the ocean; how
long recovery will take from this disaster is unknown.
Bibliography lists 1 source.
